From “Art for art’s sake” to “Art for the community’s sake” to “Art for Life’s sake”
( presented at Performers(‘) Present International Artistic Research Symposium 2019: Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music)
Abstract
Due to the growing global internet accessibility around the globe, music has become a commodity that anyone can consume very easily. As a consequence, we as classical musicians often have difficulty finding enough of an audience to hear our live music if we are limited to performing in the traditional concert venues. Has the role of musicians changed? What kind of changes are taking place in conservatories today?
This presentation is a story of one performing musician who faced this challenge and how she chose to become a teaching artist.
In order to make a meaningful connection between the music and society, the work of a teaching artist involves contributing to music making in an interactive and improvisatory way. The program is tailor-made to fit each specific occasion.
I will show two examples of my work as a teaching artist: one from a school concert in a public elementary school in Kawasaki city, and another from some volunteer work at a junior high school in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Through the presentation, I will address the issue of how such added roles necessitate performing musicians to not only acquire skills to perform music as it is written in as precise a manner as possible, but also compose and to transcribe music themselves. This is a time for us to re-think and re-frame our music education in a new context in hopes of developing creativity for everyone involved in the process.

音楽によるアウトリーチ活動
インターアクティヴ・パフォーマンス(体験型芸術教育)による取り組み
平成23年度活動報告書 リトルクラシックin Kawasaki
昨今アウトリーチという言葉は、社会にだいぶ浸透してきたように感じる。
音楽におけるアウトリーチは、一般的には音楽に触れる機会が少ない人々が集まる公共の場へ、音楽家の方が出向いて、プロの生演奏を身近で聴いてもらう活動である。音楽の力を充分発揮できるように、技術の高い演奏であると共に、心や感覚に訴えかける力を持つ演奏を提供することを目標としている。
アウトリーチ活動を通して、音楽と共に生きることを地域に広めることは、社会全体の生活の質の向上にもつながる可能性がある。東日本大震災後、科学の発達と経済成長と共に築き上げた物資的豊かさが、簡単に失われることを目の当たりにした私たちにとって、音楽を含めた芸術は生きる力や向上心に触れ、生きる証になったり、人間としての根源的な価値観形成を可能にするものだと考えている。
